Opéra national de Paris
The Opéra national de Paris is the principal opera company of France, descending from the Académie d’Opéra established in 1669. Across more than three centuries it premiered defining works of French grand opera and shaped the European operatic tradition. Since 1989 its main operatic home has been the Opéra Bastille, a large modern house built for the bicentenary of the French Revolution, while the historic Palais Garnier hosts intimate productions and the ballet. The combined seasons offer one of the most extensive programmes in Europe. The company presents a repertoire ranging from Rameau and Gluck through Verdi, Wagner and Strauss to contemporary creation, performed by an international roster of singers and conductors before audiences of more than 800,000 each year.
